Periodic limb movements disorder (PLMD), also known as periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS),
is a disorder characterized by involuntary limb (most often leg) movements which occur repetitively during
the night and are often accompanied by arousals. Patients may complain of insomnia and excessive
daytime sleepiness. PLMD is most often unrecognized by both patient and physician.
The prevalence of PLMD increases with age, with 5% in young adults, and 44% in elderly adults aged 65
and above. PLMD has been assiciated with chronic disorders such as congestive heart failure, kidney
failure, essential hypertention and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.
PLMD is diagnosed by a full night polysomnographic (PSG) recording in the sleep laboratory. Ambulatory PSG systems may also be used. However, due to lack of awareness, PLMD most often goes undiagnosed
or may be diagnosed incidentally when other sleep disorders are suspected.

There is great demand for a simple, low-cost diagnostic device, which would allow general practitioners,
neurologists, sleep specialists and others to reliably diagnose and measure the severity of PLMD.
This clinical tool may be useful for diagnostic purposes as well as for monitoring treatment and for
follow-up.

The KickStrip® is a low-cost, disposable self-use home test for PLMD. Its indications correlate well
with comparable indications from formal sleep lab studies. Results are read directly off the built-in
permanent display and there is no need to download and analyze the data. Two sensors are used - one
for each leg.

Relevant patents and FDA approval were applied for, and clinical validation studies have proved its
accuracy. The KickStrip® is the second member in SLP's line of disposable physiological monitoring
devices, following in the footsteps of the SleepStrip® Disposable Sleep Apnea Screener, already on sale
worldwide.
